Is Kashmir safe to visit in 2025? This is the most-asked question about India's most spectacular destination. The short answer: yes, Kashmir is safe for tourists, and the valley is welcoming more visitors than ever before. Domestic tourism hit record highs in 2023 with over 2 crore visitors — more than Rajasthan.
Major tourist areas — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg — have been consistently safe for tourists since 2019. The Indian Army and police maintain a heavy presence across tourist zones. Hotels, houseboats and restaurants are well-accustomed to visitors from all over India and world.
Travel advisories: Check the latest advisory from the Ministry of Tourism before visiting. Avoid venturing into remote border areas without a registered guide.
Spring (March–May): The most beautiful season. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden (Asia's largest) blooms with 1.5 million tulips in April. Cherry blossoms and mustard fields. Snow still on peaks.
Summer (June–August): Peak season. Gulmarg is snow-free, meadows are green. Sonamarg glacier accessible. Book hotels far in advance.
Autumn (September–November): Chinar trees turn fiery orange and red — the famous Kashmir autumn. Most photogenic season. Moderate crowds.
Winter (December–February): Gulmarg transforms into a world-class ski resort. Dal Lake may partially freeze. Srinagar gets light snowfall. Magical.
1. Dal Lake Houseboat: Stay on a traditional wooden houseboat on Dal Lake — hand-carved cedar interiors, personal shikara, breakfast served as the floating market passes your window at 7am.
2. Gulmarg Gondola: The Gulmarg gondola (Phase 2) reaches 4,200m — the world's highest operating gondola. In winter, it's pure powder skiing. In summer, it's jaw-dropping mountain views.
3. Pahalgam Betab Valley: Pahalgam (2,130m) is a peaceful mountain town in the Lidder Valley. Betab Valley (named after the Bollywood film shot here), Aru Valley and Chandanwari are the top spots.
4. Mughal Gardens: Nishat Bagh (the Garden of Bliss), Shalimar Bagh (the Abode of Love), and Chashme Shahi — three formal terraced gardens built by Mughal emperors on the shores of Dal Lake.
5. Sonamarg Glacier: Sonamarg (Meadow of Gold) at 2,800m is the gateway to the Thajiwas Glacier — accessible by pony ride. June to September.
By Air: Sheikh ul Alam Airport, Srinagar has direct flights from Delhi (1.5 hrs), Mumbai (2.5 hrs), Bangalore (3 hrs) and all major Indian cities. Book 2-3 months in advance for summer and winter peak seasons.
By Road: Delhi to Srinagar via Jammu is 800km — a 2-day drive through spectacular Banihal Tunnel. Not recommended for first-timers.
Kashmir is surprisingly affordable compared to international Himalayan destinations. A 5-day package including houseboat, Gulmarg day trip, Pahalgam and all transfers typically costs ₹20,000-35,000 per person on twin sharing from Srinagar.
