Elsewhere is five restored 1880s Portuguese houses on a private sandbar near Mandrem, reached only by crossing a 60-metre bamboo footbridge over Otter Creek — there's no other building in sight in either direction. Fashion photographer Denzil Sequeira restored the houses in 2006 and kept them deliberately unpolished: cobalt-blue open-air bathrooms, muslin four-poster beds, bare brick walls, hammocks strung across wide verandas. Each house — the Priest's House, the Captain's House, the Bakery, the Piggery, the Creek House — is let as a whole rather than by the room, alongside a set of tented camps by the creek. There's no spa, no entertainment programme and patchy wifi; meals are cooked to order from a small kitchen. This is for couples or small groups who want genuine isolation and don't need to be entertained; it's the wrong choice for anyone who wants hotel service, a pool or reliable connectivity.

The Piggery

Two ensuite bedrooms in a smaller, more intimate footprint, good for a couple travelling with one other pair.

The Creek House

The smallest option, a single bedroom directly overlooking Otter Creek, best suited to a couple wanting maximum privacy.
