Vivanta Tawang, run by IHCL's Taj group, is the only genuine five-star in Arunachal Pradesh, and it sits just below the 400-year-old Tawang Monastery at roughly 3,000 metres. The drive in from Tezpur runs about 350km over the Sela Pass (13,700 ft), a two-day trip that can close without warning in heavy snow, so build in a spare day either way. Inside, the hotel plays it straight rather than showy: heated floors, alpine-cedar furniture, and picture windows framing either the monastery or the valley depending on room category. It's a proper hotel in a town that otherwise runs on homestays and government lodges, and it shows in the service standard, the spa, and a kitchen that handles both Monpa dishes and a competent multi-cuisine menu.
