Built in 1910 as a guesthouse for the British Resident by Maharaja Pratap Singh, this remains the closest thing Kashmir has to a genuine palace hotel. It sits on the Boulevard side of Dal Lake, its six acres of lawn running down to a private jetty where the hotel's own shikaras wait. Walnut panelling, first-growth chinar trees older than the building, and rooms carved out of the original royal wing (the Maharaja and Maharani suites keep their period fittings) set it apart from Srinagar's newer luxury builds. The Wazwan restaurant runs the full multi-course Kashmiri banquet on request, and there's a hammam-style spa for the cold months. Traffic on the Boulevard picks up by mid-morning, so garden-facing rooms are quieter than the lakefront ones. Good for travellers who want history and lake proximity in one address; not for anyone chasing minimalist design or ski access, since Gulmarg is two hours away.
