Pinewood Hotel

Rilbong, Shillong

  • Heritage
  • City Luxury
  • Family

Built in 1897, Pinewood is the oldest operating hotel in Shillong and has kept its colonial bones — sloping roofs, timber verandas and gardens planted with the pine trees it's named for, spread over grounds that feel large for a city-centre address in Rilbong. It's a working heritage hotel rather than a restored showpiece, with six room categories from a basic Standard Room up to a Presidential Cottage, and the older wings show their age more than the newer ones. Room heaters and hot water are standard given Shillong's cold, damp winters. This is not a luxury property by contemporary five-star standards, and it doesn't pretend to be: the draw is the building itself, the gardens, and a slower, old-fashioned pace of service that suits travellers more interested in Shillong's colonial history than in spa menus. Families and heritage-minded couples get more out of it than anyone chasing polish.

Rooms & suites

Standard Room

The most basic category, simply furnished with an attached bath, room heater and hot water. Functional rather than atmospheric, and priced accordingly for the age of the wing.

Deluxe Room

A mid-tier room with more space and better furnishings than Standard, still within the original colonial-era wings of the property, overlooking the pine gardens.

Super Deluxe Room

The upgraded version of Deluxe, with additional amenities like a DVD player in some rooms and a better outlook over the gardens and grounds.

Presidential Room

The hotel's top standard room category, larger and better appointed than Super Deluxe, typically booked by guests wanting the best non-cottage option available.

Presidential Cottage

A standalone cottage within the pine gardens, the most private and expensive category, favoured by guests wanting separation from the main building.
