Umiam Lake sits about 15 km before Shillong on the Guwahati highway, a reservoir the British-era engineers created by damming the Umiam River, and Ri Kynjai occupies a quiet spur of its shoreline about 35 minutes from the city centre and 90 minutes from Guwahati airport.
