The Chail Palace
Chail, Solan district, Himachal Pradesh, approx. 2,250m
- Heritage
- Secluded
- Family
Chail was developed as a summer retreat by the Patiala royal family from the 1890s, on a ridge about 45km from Shimla by a longer, quieter road than the Kalka-Shimla highway sees. Local lore says the maharaja built it after falling out of favour with the British administration in Shimla itself; whatever the truth, the family also laid out a cricket ground on a levelled hilltop nearby, still cited as the highest in the world at roughly 2,444m. The palace, now run as a heritage hotel across 75 acres of deodar and pine, keeps period furniture and fireplaces in its main rooms, and has separate forest log huts a short walk from the main building for guests who want more privacy. Facilities are dated compared with a five-star chain hotel, and Wi-Fi and heating can be inconsistent in winter. It suits history-minded travellers and families wanting space to roam; it is not the choice for anyone expecting polished five-star service.
