Chonor House is a small hotel run as an arm of the Norbulingka Institute, the Tibetan arts and culture organisation based lower down the valley, and sits on Temple Road a short walk from the Dalai Lama's residence and the Tsuglagkhang temple complex. British architect David Porter designed it to sit into the cedar-covered hillside rather than dominate it, and each room is hand-painted by Norbulingka artists around a different theme — a Tibetan region, a species of bird, a symbolic flower — so no two rooms look alike. Profits go back into the institute's craft and culture programmes, which matters to some travellers and not others. McLeod Ganj's narrow lanes mean no direct vehicle drop-off to the door in places, and the town gets heavy monsoon rain and leeches July through September. It suits travellers interested in Tibetan culture and Dharamshala's exile community over pure luxury; it is not built for anyone wanting a pool, spa or resort-scale grounds.
What sets it apart
- Run by the Norbulingka Institute of Tibetan Culture
- Short walk from the Dalai Lama's temple complex
- Every room hand-painted around a distinct Tibetan theme
- Profits support Tibetan craft and culture programmes
- No pool or spa, culture over resort facilities
