Thirteen kilometres and roughly forty minutes by road from Shimla's Mall, this Oberoi property sits on the former retreat of Lord Kitchener, commander-in-chief of British India, in a deodar and oak forest above Mashobra. The mock-Tudor building looks colonial but was constructed in 2001, and the interiors lean into that heritage fiction with four-poster beds and Victorian-style lamps rather than mountain minimalism. Winters bring genuine snow and log fires; the approach road can turn to slush after heavy falls, so allow extra time December through February. The heated indoor pool, spa and forest trails matter more here than any single sight nearby. It suits couples and travellers who want to be looked after in a fixed base for two or three nights. It is the wrong choice for anyone wanting to be within walking distance of Shimla's shops and cafés, or for a large multi-generational family group.
