Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel
Mysore — foot of Chamundi Hill
- Heritage
- Family
- City Luxury
Built between 1921 and 1930 for the Governor-General of India's visits and for European guests of the Mysore royal family, Lalitha Mahal was designed by Bombay architect E.W. Fritchley, with a central dome modelled on St Paul's Cathedral, Ionic columns and stained glass throughout. It's been a hotel since 1974, first under the Ashok Group and ITDC, now run by a Karnataka state tourism unit. Rooms split across the original Palace Wing — Turret, Standard, Heritage and Heritage Classic categories, plus two Grand Suites, the Duplex and the two-room Viceroy Suite — and a plainer Pool Wing added later. Come for the building rather than five-star polish: the domed reception hall, staircases and corridors carry real history, while some rooms are modest by comparison to newer luxury properties. It's ten minutes from Mysore Palace and well placed for the Dasara festival period, September to October, when the city is at its most crowded and most worth seeing.
