The Serai is built entirely as villas — there's no standard hotel room on the property — spread through a working coffee plantation at Mugthihalli, a short drive outside Chikmagalur town. Three categories: the Estate Villa, single-storey with its own pool or jacuzzi and a poolside gazebo; the Estate Terrace, a two-level villa with the bedroom upstairs overlooking the tree canopy and a private pool downstairs; and The Residence, a two-bedroom villa with its own garden, built for families or two couples travelling together. Chikmagalur's estates sit higher and cooler than Coorg's, and this is Karnataka's original coffee-growing district, first planted by Baba Budan in the 1600s — the range above town still carries his name. Trekking to Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri peaks is the main reason to leave the villa. Harvest season, November to February, is liveliest; monsoon, June to September, is the quietest and greenest stretch, good for anyone who actually wants the plantation to themselves.
