Naini Retreat sits on the Ayarpatta slopes at about 1,995 metres, a steep ten-minute walk or short drive above Nainital's Mall Road and Naini Lake, which the hotel's better rooms look straight down on. Originally the summer residence of the Maharaja of Pilibhit, it was taken over by IHCL in 2021 and restored as a SeleQtions property, keeping the colonial bones — timber-framed windows, wraparound verandas, oak and pine forest up to the property line — while updating the plumbing and adding a spa. Lake Facing and Naini Royal rooms are worth the premium; Garden and Superior rooms look into the hillside forest instead and cost noticeably less. Because it sits above town rather than on the Mall itself, you avoid the peak-season crowds and traffic around the lake but need transport, or a willingness to walk uphill, to reach restaurants and boating. Works well for a couple or family wanting real hill-station character over a modern resort; less ideal if mobility is an issue given the slope.
