Windsor Lodge began in 1909 as a hunting lodge on the Kalika Estate, and the six original buildings — restored rather than rebuilt — still carry that colonial character: dark wood, antique furniture, and a hillock position looking over pine and cedar forest to the Ranikhet Golf Course next door, among the oldest courses in Asia. Twenty-six rooms split across old and new wings; the original wing has genuine period charm but no air conditioning, which barely matters given Ranikhet's altitude keeps things mild even in summer and cold enough in winter to need the fireplace instead. This is Kumaon at its quietest — Ranikhet has no lake and no major tourist pull, and stays largely a cantonment town, so evenings here are properly still. Good for anyone wanting a genuine heritage estate stay with tennis and golf on hand rather than a spa-resort itinerary; not the choice if you need modern climate control in every room or want nightlife within reasonable reach, because there isn't any.
