Cochrane Place
Kurseong, Darjeeling hills, 1,458m
- Tea Estate
- Heritage
- Mountain View
- Fine Dining
Cochrane Place occupies the former residence of Percy John Cochrane, MBE, on a ridge in Kurseong looking across three working tea gardens — Makaibari, Castleton and Ambootia — rather than at a single view. Kurseong sits about 1,458m up, roughly two hours from Bagdogra on the Hill Cart Road and one stop on the narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, so it pairs well with a toy-train leg. The hotel keeps a vintage car parked by the entrance and leans into its history without overplaying it — arts, antiques and a genuinely local kitchen rather than a themed restaurant. Rooms are modest in scale, with the better ones facing an unobstructed line to Kanchenjunga. It is a calmer, cheaper alternative to staying in Darjeeling town itself, without the crowds around Chowrasta or Mall Road. Good for travellers building a tea-estate-focused itinerary who do not need Glenburn's all-inclusive price tag; not the choice for anyone wanting Darjeeling's shops and nightlife on the doorstep.
