Windamere started life in 1841 as Ada Villa, a boarding house for British tea planters, before the Tenduf-La family bought and converted it into a hotel in 1939. It sits on Observatory Hill above Chowrasta, close enough to walk to the Mall but shielded by its own pine and rhododendron grounds. Rooms are named for past guests and associations rather than numbered plainly — a Chogyal of Sikkim Suite, a Begum Aga Khan Suite — and the hotel keeps genuinely old-fashioned habits: no central heating, a coal fire lit in each occupied room every evening instead, a gong for dinner, afternoon tea served properly. It is not polished in the chain-hotel sense; wifi is patchy and furniture creaks, and that is the point for regulars who have been coming for decades. Darjeeling town is roughly three hours from Bagdogra or NJP. Right for travellers who want genuine Raj-era eccentricity and do not mind cold at the edges of the room; wrong for anyone wanting modern minimalism or reliable connectivity.

  • Built 1841 as a planters' boarding house
  • Coal fires lit nightly, no central heating
  • Rooms named for historic guests, not numbers
  • On Observatory Hill above Chowrasta
  • Formal gong-and-dinner-bell house traditions
