Tumsong Tea Retreat

Tumsong Tea Estate, Takdah, Darjeeling district, ~1,550m

  • Tea Estate
  • Honeymoon
  • Secluded
  • Mountain View

Tumsong sits on a working tea estate above Takdah, a former British cantonment quieter than Darjeeling proper — the old regimental clubhouse still stands empty a kilometre from the market junction. The retreat's core is a Burra Sahib's bungalow reckoned around 150 years old, run today by the Chamong group, which manages several Darjeeling estate stays. Four room categories split by aspect: Mist Valley and Autumn Valley Abodes look over garden and forest, while the pricier Spring Valley and Summer Valley Abodes face Kanchenjunga directly, worth the upgrade on a clear morning. Ghoom, the highest station on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, is about 15km away, so a toy-train leg fits naturally around a stay. Darjeeling town is roughly an hour by road, Bagdogra closer to three. Days run on estate time — a factory tour, a tasting, a brunch from whatever the garden has that week, then not much else. Wifi is limited, no bar menu beyond meals. Right for a couple wanting a genuine working-estate stay without Glenburn's price tag; wrong for anyone wanting nightlife or fast connectivity.
