The Elgin Silver Oaks

Silver Oaks was built in the 1930s as a private residence for a British jute magnate before passing to Frederick Deshraj and eventually becoming part of the Elgin group's heritage portfolio. Kalimpong sits lower and drier than Darjeeling, around 1,250m, about 3.5 hours from Bagdogra via the Teesta bridge, and is a genuinely different town — less about tea, more about its old trade-route character and Tibetan Buddhist institutions. The house keeps its original panelling, pillars and chandeliers, set in gardens planted with petunias, azaleas and orchids that front-facing rooms look over, with Kanchenjunga visible past the valley on clear days. There is no air conditioning across the property, standard for hill hotels at this elevation, and the hotel runs horse treks through the surrounding valley rather than a spa-led activity list. It suits travellers adding Kalimpong as a quieter counterpoint to Darjeeling or Gangtok, a market town rather than a tourist strip; wrong for anyone wanting AC, a resort pool scene or nightlife within walking distance.
