Nor-Khill — house of jewels — opened in 1934 as the Chogyal of Sikkim's official guesthouse, making it the oldest hotel in the state and one of the few Gangtok buildings that predate Indian statehood. It sits on Paljor Stadium Road in the middle of town, close enough to MG Marg to walk, with the old Kanchen Garden — reportedly the Chogyal's favourite corner of the property — still intact. Twenty-five rooms in total, low-rise and wood-panelled, run with the same restrained colonial-Sikkimese register as the Elgin group's other heritage properties. Guests are met with a khada scarf and a glass of cherry liqueur on arrival, a small ritual that has stayed rather than a marketing add-on. Rooms are simple by five-star standards — no spa circuit, no pool — and the appeal is squarely the history and the address, not resort infrastructure. Right for travellers who want to be in the middle of Gangtok in an old building; wrong for anyone chasing amenities or a guaranteed Kanchenjunga view.
