Lachung sits on the Lachung river in North Sikkim, a switchback-heavy 120km and five-to-six-hour drive from Gangtok, itself 4.5–5.5 hours from Bagdogra, which is why almost nobody visits without an overnight stop here. Yarlam is one of the better-appointed options in a village where luxury means reliable hot water and a heater that actually works, not spa circuits. Its thirty rooms split across straightforward categories — heaters, mini-bars and satellite TV rather than design flourishes — because the point of staying is proximity to Yumthang Valley and Zero Point the next morning, both reachable only with a Protected Area Permit arranged through a registered agent as part of an organised convoy, not independently. Apple orchards surround the village, best seen in bloom April–May; winter can close the roads north entirely. This is a base for the drive, not a destination in itself. Right for travellers doing the classic Gangtok–Lachung–Lachen loop; wrong for anyone expecting Gangtok-level comfort this far north.
