Yangsum began as a farmhouse in 1833, was rebuilt in 1966, and is still run day to day by Thendup Tashi and his wife Pema on 44 acres of mixed forest and cultivated land in Rinchenpong, West Sikkim, roughly a five-hour drive from Bagdogra via Jorethang. The farm is working, not decorative: maize, paddy, millet, potatoes, ginger and turmeric grow on the slopes below the five guest cottages, and meals are built around whatever is harvested that week, served in the communal living room or on a verandah rather than a set restaurant menu. Alastair Sawday's guides picked it as one of India's better small stays for exactly this reason — it is not styled as a resort. There is no spa, no bar, patchy wifi at best, and Rinchenpong itself is a monastery and a market rather than an attraction. Right for travellers who want unstructured time and home-cooked Sikkimese food; wrong for anyone who wants facilities, air conditioning or a fast checkout.
