Kolakham - The Himalayan Retreat
Lower Kolakham village, near Lava, Kalimpong district, ~1,890m
- Secluded
- Mountain View
- Wildlife
- Honeymoon
This is a small, gated retreat on sloped land in Lower Kolakham, about 6,200 feet up on the edge of Neora Valley National Park, roughly 10km below Lava and noticeably cooler and quieter than either Lava or Kalimpong town. Only seven rooms sit across the property, which runs entirely on renewable power, and the standout space is Silent Valley Hawaghar, a round terrace built for a 360-degree look — Kanchenjunga on a clear day, plus Sangphung waterfall, Lava's monastery roofline and the Reshi river below. Rooms are described by outlook — mountain, valley or landmark-facing — rather than styled into named suites, with private balconies and tile or marble floors rather than heavy furnishing. The one dining option is Café Himalayan Hotpot, twenty windows around a low-seated room. The drive in from Bagdogra runs through Kalimpong and the Lava road, the better part of three hours, and monsoon months can bring landslip on that stretch. Good for travellers wanting quiet and a shot at red panda country nearby; wrong for anyone wanting room choice, a lift, or dining variety.
