Taj Bekal sits on Kappil Beach in Kerala's far north, a region with a fraction of the tourist traffic of Kochi or Kovalam. The architecture takes its cues from the kettuvallom houseboat — woven bamboo roof lines, laterite-red walls, hand-painted murals — arranged around a backwater canal that winds through the 26-acre grounds before opening onto the Arabian Sea. Bekal Fort, the largest fort in Kerala, is about 3 km away and worth the short drive. Mangalore airport is roughly 55 km south; Kochi is a five-hour drive. The plunge-pool villas and the Presidential Suite's private pool make it a genuine honeymoon draw, and the relative remoteness suits travellers who want beach and backwater without crowds. Less suited to anyone wanting Kochi's heritage-town buzz within reach.
