Windermere is a working tea and cardamom estate at around 1,600 metres in Pothamedu, just outside Munnar town, built around an original planter's bungalow with newer chalet-style rooms cut into the hillside among the tea bushes. It stays deliberately small at eighteen rooms, so the estate never feels developed — the air genuinely smells of cardamom and wood smoke, and the tea valleys and high ranges are visible from most rooms rather than glimpsed from a common terrace. Kochi airport is about 130 km and four to five hours away by road, most of it climbing through the Ghats. Best from October to March when skies are clear; the June–August monsoon is lush but wet and often socked in with cloud. Right for travellers who want a working plantation, quiet, and cool air over resort facilities; not for anyone wanting a pool, spa menu, or nightlife.
