<p>Darjeeling is a West Bengal hill station at about 6,700 ft, built by the British as a summer retreat and still recognisably that: a Mall, a Planters' Club, and tea estates running down every slope.</p><p>The <strong>Darjeeling Himalayan Railway</strong> — the toy train — has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 and still runs steam-hauled joy rides between Darjeeling and Ghoom, the highest railway station in India. The other fixed point in every itinerary is <strong>Tiger Hill</strong>, where the pre-dawn queue exists because on a clear morning you see Kanchenjunga light up before the sun reaches the valley, and on a good one, Everest on the horizon.</p><p><strong>No permit is required</strong> for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Mirik or Kurseong. That single fact is why Darjeeling is the easier half of the region to plan, and why it suits shorter trips and travellers who would rather not build a holiday around altitude.</p>
